Directory Submission Isn’t Dead: Here’s How To Use It

One of the earliest SEO services that were offered by optimization companies many years back was directory submission. Back then, it was a great type of off-page optimization strategy and ensured immediate improvement in the ranks and visibility of websites. However, it started falling off the preference list of webmasters when people overused it. It also got hit hard by the search engine algorithm updates (Panda, Penguin, etc.) that were released in the succeeding years. Today, a lot of people consider directory submission as a dead SEO strategy.

Contrary to this belief, directory submission is very much alive. In fact, its effectiveness in improving a website’s rank, traffic, and visibility hasn’t even faded. With link diversification through the use of natural anchor text keywords, there is no reason why a website using this strategy won’t prosper. It can be noted too that companies who are offering SEO services never stopped doing directory submissions. This is even if there are many new SEO tactics and approaches that have been created over the years.

The use of directory submission isn’t really rocket science. Anybody can do it with much efficiency, even without formal training. As mentioned, diversifying links is one of the first things to do. Search engines, most especially Google, favor websites that contain natural links. These links become “natural” when it contains the relevant keywords that a website is aiming to rank for. This is where the job of the website owner becomes critical. He or she must be able to include keywords in those links in a balanced manner so as not to make it spammy but still generate the desired improvement in rank or traffic.

The repeated use of a specific keyword makes a link look unnatural. To diversify the link, there are several things that can be done. The website owner can reduce the frequency of use of the keyword, introduce anchor diversity, and combine no-follow and do-follow elements in the link. It must be noted that this is how simple the process can be and yet a lot of webmasters still commit basic mistakes that harm their site’s SEO.
