Enterprise-Wallowa was a fixture in the finals.
Boys on the co-op of two local high schools wrestled in 12 of 14 championship matches Jan. 30 at the Terry Crenshaw Memorial Tournament in Wallowa. Seven of them won first place medals. Their team accumulated 147 points, enough for second place behind Pine Eagle High School's 167 points.
"It's good that we're doing so well at one of our home tournaments," said Enterprise sophomore Brock Hayes, who bested the 130-pound weight class by pinning Jaden Bales of Imbler. Hayes' personal record for this season improved to 26-3.
Title bouts provided five of Hayes' teammates from Wallowa with opportunities to defend their school's gym. Senior Cameron Princena finished as the heavyweight champ. He won two matches: a 9-4 decision over Mike Short of Union and a third-period pin of Pine Eagle's Daniel Minarich. Joe Reynolds, a 189-pound senior, pinned two opponents. Forrest Cox, a junior at 125 pounds, outscored Chaeden Luebberke of Pine Eagle in a semifinal. Junior Salvador Mendez, 119 pounds, and sophomore John Surber (160) also advanced to the finals.
Enterprise gave plenty of support. Champions included freshman Austin Reimer at 103 pounds, sophomore Josh Higginbotham (112), Hayes (130), senior Ethan Osterloh (140), senior Jake Nicholls (152) and junior Alex Courtney (189). The team also took second-place medals from junior Josh Connelly at 145 pounds and sophomore Erich Roepke (171).
Teammates capitalized in consolations. Freshman Trever Schaeffer ended in third place in the 135. Freshman John Green was fourth in 125, as was sophomore Michael Baty in 189 and junior Jake Schaeffer (215).
Meanwhile, freshman Sawyer Wick (140), freshman Eric Schwendiman (152), freshman Jordan Widener (171), sophomore Glen Spang (189) each worked two matches.
Next, Enterprise-Wallowa will drive Feb. 6 to Heppner.
