I would not do it justice here in an email so I would appreciate if you would go to www.hsus.org, www.equineadvocates.com, www.kaufmanzoining.net/horsemeat/ and see a slaughter in progress.
Then I would ask you to email me because I would like to understand why this "Dirty Little Secret," is not being made available to the general public.
Everyone I talk to has no idea that this is happening to our horses and they become involved to stop it, but I see the tears and I know there are so many more people who are not aware of this. I am also sure that majority of the American public will feel the same once they are aware.
If the senate does not vote on H.R. 503/S. 1915 during its lame duck session, another 100,000 horses, at least, will die horrific, brutal, senseless deaths.
The only three slaughterhouses in the US are ALL foreign owned and the meat they butcher from our American horses, is shipped overseas to be eaten as sushi, appetizers costing $20 to $40 per pound.
Worst yet, is the tax returns I have from one slaugherhouse. $12 million dollar income and $5 in taxes to our U.S.
What is wrong with this? We have our horses being slaughtered in foreign owned slaughterhouses in the U.S., with the meat being shipped overseas, with no profit to America. Not to mention the money that is being spent by USDA to test horses for the perfect meat. That's right, guinea pigs who are put to slaughter after the tests are complete.
This American Horse Slaughter Protection Act was passed overwhelming in the House of Representatives on Sept. 7, 2006 and yet it still sits in the Commerce Committee waiting to be released to the Senate for a vote.
Every four minutes, a beautiful healthy, young horse is slaughtered for it's meat.
The transport of equines in trucks designed to transport cattle is also so very inhumane when you have to actually fold that horse in half so he will fit in a compartment.
Go to www.hsus.org and see the rescue of 40 horses from a slaughterbound truck in Missouri.
Please visit Grace Foundation of Northern California to see the rescued horses, one being a two month old colt who was on a slaughterbound truck. Also visit Longmeadow Ranch of Missouri to see the 25 out of 42 horses that survived the horrific overturned truck accident.
Ask yourself, do any of these horses look old or sick?
Are you aware that two slaughterhouses are Belgium owned and horse slaughter for human consumption is illegal in that country? That would explain why they like the United States because they can do their dirty work here and to our horses and don't pay for the privilege.
None of this horsemeat is used to feed a starving nation, it is just a good way to make a buck to them.
93 percent of American people polled did not approve of horse slaughter.
We need H.R. 503/S. 1915 to be voted on before the end of this 109th Congress session or the killing will continue to please the foreigners, not our people
For those of you who have not, please have the courage to do what is right and that is simply alert the American public to this issue.

Call to the United States Congress.
I do not know what it will take for you to hear the American people regarding stopping the slaughter of American Horse for overseas human consumption! The polls are out there for you to see. This does not make sense that slaughter is still going on. Polls are anywhere from 73% to 94% of Americans wanting this stopped! Common sense will tell me, it is all about the money. When polls say 73% to 94% Americans want this stopped, that leaves our opposition "pro-slaughter" with a voice of 27% to 6%. Why do you refuse to listen to us? Where are the ethics today in politics? Senators opposed to the ban were minimal yet, they succeeded in killing this bill. Today, Senators, we are all feeling there is so much corruption in your house. We were told getting the bill pass the House of Representatives was the hardest part of the journey, yet they VOTED and passed it overwhelmingly by a 243-146 margin with some not voting. Rep. Bob Goodlatte's apparent disapproval ended up having the wrong bill sent to your house, taking precious time away from our horses. How can you ignore our numerous phone calls, 73% to 94% over pro-slaughter and feel you did your job by being our voices? How can you sleep at night knowing every 4 minutes a horse is slaughtered because of you? Thankfully the use of double deckers has been banned, but the killer buyers will find another way to transport a big load to save money. We will not go away, we will hope the new Democrats coming in will stand up for what is fair. Killing our horses to feed foreigners is not fair. It is not economical for Americans, except if you are a killer buyer or USDA/APHIS. The unwanted horse, does not exist, there are rescues right at this moment, paying per pound at a feedlot to keep the horses from going to slaughter. There are stolen horses, who hides have been identified by children. I am ashamed! To have a horse stolen from a child then that child getting a phone call that their horse was recovered, then to have to see it's hide, this is un-American all around. Daily phone calls, emails, faxes, letters to your offices, ignored by you. The people have spoken, we are not rich, we have hearts, we have a conscious, we have no gain. I spent my Christmas in tears. How can I live with myself when I went to my Senators, my voice and let the horses down. We will be a stronger voice this year, all we asked for from you was to get the American Horse Slaughter Protection Act, out for a vote, didn't ask you to make sure it passed, just to allow the horses to have due process. You let us down, we are very hurt by the way this country is run. Yet, we will be calling you and we will continue to call you until we get a vote. Just to the right thing, go see the video at www.equineadvocates.com and then go to www.hsus.org and see the overturned truck rescue and tell me if you can live with yourself for not doing anything. All we want is due process and for this legislation to get a vote one way or the other, do the right thing, do the American thing. You sit in office because we used our power and gave you a vote, now it is time to return the favor to your constituents. Anyone who wants to stop this process, call your Representatives and Senators and demand they carry out your voice for the horses. Please do the right thing!

How is this possible? I wonder what kind of country are we that our government will allow horese to be killed for food that's sent to other countries? Is it for the money?? Is it always about the MONEY? Let a senator's child have his or her horse stolen by a killer buyer and see if they feel it's an O.K. thing to do. No horse-no animal anywhere-deserves such a horrific fate! Shame on our government for allowing it to happen and to continue!!

Thank God for Sharon's letter! THIS ATROCITY MUST BE STOPPED NOW!!!!The Europeans aren't aware of the toxicity of the meat. The method of slaughter is beyond barbarism!! Horses are companion animals of great sensitivity and intelligence. There would be no America without them.EVERYONE MUST CONTACT THEIR SENATORS AND LET THEM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL!!!STOP AMERICA'S BLOODY SECRET NOW!!!

Sharon, Thank you for putting the information together so neatly. We need to motivate more people to insist our government listen to the will of the American people and not the greed of a few heartless businessmen. The more I learn about politics, the more sickened I become. Is there any decency left in our government? I think very little. Time to act people!!! Janice

I am completely dismayed that our senators turned a deaf ear to the constant pleas of a multitude of concerned Americans who spoke out vehemently against horse slaughter--- by signing petitions through the HSUS, by sending e-mails to their elected represntatives, their senators, by calling and leaving polite considerate messages beseeching their senators to stand up and cosponsor S1915 the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I am disappointed; but alas not suprised for the hubris, the self interest of man, particularly in this day and age is overwhelming. No man is master of the universe. Nature cannot be continually surpressed in favour of man's selfish interests!
What a disgrace --- a Congress that was in session for a record few days chose, in the waning moments of the session, to ignore the knowledgeable Americans who stood up valiantly and made their voices be known against horse slaughter. The only possible voice for the voicelss equine is that of concerned human beings.
The horse is a companion animal, without whom this great nation of ours would never have come into being. Not more than a century ago many lives were saved because the physician arrived in time on horseback --- his only means of transportation. What a lack of respect; what ingratitude for man's other best friend, the horse.
As more people become aware and educated to this shameful issue, we will overwhelm the ignorance and the denial of those who refuse to act. We will win peaecefuly. The pen is mightier than the sword. Sadly, despite our rescue efforts, many souls and worthy lives will be lost while the slaughtering goes un unabated.
Sincerely, CR Reiss
