Diane, I agree with your letter completely, but if I may, I would like to add to your message: A good man would not consider slaughtering his animals, he would have more appreciation for all that they have given him and more regard for their lives - lives which he has accepted responsibility for by having them in the first place.
A good man would have taken into account the end of life expenses involved before committing to caring for them all their lives, and would gladly pay those expenses in return for all that his animals have done for him.
A good man would not trade the dignity and comfort of his animal's last moments for a few dollars.
A good man would be with his animal till the end of it's journey and would do all he could to make that end as comfortable and dignified as possible.
A good man would not be able to send his horse to slaughter. What "good" person could knowingly send an animal to be tortured and brutally killed?
Caring about living things does not end when they become old, infirm, or are not "useful" any more. For those that disagree with the last part, please remember, "one man's trash is another man's treasure." Good people have compassion for all living things, regardless of their monetary value, age or health. Although one man may no longer value the faithful animal who has served him all its life, there is another - there are MANY more - who will gladly take that animal and care for it for the remainder of its life.
A good man would see to it that his animal went to such a caring person if he were not able to continue to care for it himself.
Good people do not cram horses into double deck trailers, deny them food, water and comfort, and transport them to be brutally slaughtered.
Good people do not misrepresent themselves to owners in order to buy an animal cheaply to send to slaughter.
Good people do not steal horses so they can have them slaughtered.
There is no good in people who would resort to this.
Good people are appalled by horse slaughter, and good people will continue to fight until it is forever abolished in this country.
