Letter: Bill targets gun owners
Dear Editor:

There is legislation floating around somewhere in the halls of Congress that, if passed, would seriously impact the private ownership of any firearm. The number of the bill is H.R. 45 and is titled "Blair Holt Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009."

The bill is lengthy and complex. It took 17 pages just to download it on my computer!

I believe the bill is still in the House of Representatives or, perhaps, in a committee. Typical of our biased media with a strong liberal, in fact, often far left slant, little or anything has been reported concerning H.R. 45. I first learned of it through the Internet and whether you are liberal or conservative and like to hunt and have protection in your home then you need to contact your representatives to vote against this bill.

If enacted, H.R. 45 (interesting the number resembles that of a famous firearm) has provisions that would make it illegal to own a firearm - any rifle with a clip or any pistol unless it is registered, you are fingerprinted, present a valid drivers license and your social security number! You can also be subjected to a mental and physical exam at a time of "their" choosing.

Each change of ownership through public or private sale must be reported and will cost $25. If you fail to do so you will lose the right to own a firearm plus being subject to a year in jail. Another provision gives the powers that be the right to come into your home and check for proper secure storage making sure your guns are inaccessible to anyone under 18. If they find you in violation you could be subjected up to five years in prison.

To comply with the proposed legislation would make it extremely difficult to protect your home. There would be a serious impact to gun shows. Hunters and guides would be affected also. The anti-gun crowd are so paranoid that they would have considered a so-called "caveman"  from days of yore to have a semi-automatic weapon if he carried a club in each hand!
