Around & About: 7.29.10
A WILD WEEK: The sun smiled on Chief Joseph Days and it seemed like more folks than ever turned out to watch the grand parade on Saturday. Then again, doesn't it always seems like that?

Then came thunderstorm fireworks and a little rain to wash down the dusty pavement. Nothing better than summer in the Wallowas, so long as we escape the string of lightning-caused wildfires that has plagued other areas across the state.

TOP DOGS: Two of the county's service clubs have new officers.

Enterprise-Joseph Lions have installed Geoff Hayward as president; Alan Klages and Penny Arentsen, vice presidents; Pam McFarland, secretary; Dick Wheeler, treasurer; Bill Nickell, tail twister; Phil Buttolph, lion tamer and directors Paul Arentsen, Jerry Hustafa and Charles Kissinger.

The county Rotary Club elected Jeanie Story as president; Marilyn Dalton, treasurer; Dave Harman, membership chairman; Evelyn Swart, community service chairwoman; Don Green and Susan Badger-Jones, youth exchange co-chairman and co-chairwoman; John McColgan, club service chairman; Kathleen Negus, Rotary International Foundation chairwoman; Harold Black and Rich Wandschneider, international service co-chairmen; Bob Crawford, vocational chairman; Linda Casady, program chairwoman; and Ted Hays, sergeant-at-arms.

Community Connection is adding a Saturday trip to its schedule of bus runs to La Grande. The bus leaves Joseph at 8 a.m., connects with Greyhound at the La Grande transportation hub at 10:30 a.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m.

The schedule also includes a Monday run leaving at 8 a.m. and returning at 4 p.m. and a Thursday run leaving at 2:30 p.m. and returning at 9 p.m. For a schedule: 541-426-3840.

Low-income citizens and seniors in need of legal advice can get it free now. Legal Aid Services of Oregon will consult starting at 9 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at Enterprise Senior Center. For an appointment: 800-8423-1115, Ext. 201.

MORE SMART KIDS: Ashley Burgess of Wallowa made the dean's list at Linfield College in McMinnville during the spring semester as did Andrea Schaefer of Enterprise at Taylor University of Upland, Ind.
