Wallowa County Chieftain
Wallowa Lake owns the record book.
Six weeks after Wan Teece of Enterprise broke the Oregon state record for kokanee with a mamoth catch at Wallowa Lake - the sixth time since 1999 an angler pulled a fish of unprecedented size and weight from the lake - Bob Both of Lostine took his turn at the top.
Trolling with a friend Saturday, May 8 aboard a boat near the launch, Both battled in a ferocious kokanee. After he hooked the fish, on a green and red wedding ring with a silver smile blade and shoepeg corn, it jumped out of the water four times. After five minutes, he reeled in the prize. It measured 26 inches in length, 17.25 in girth. It weighed 8.85 pounds.
"I knew I had a special fish hooked up," Both said. "It put up a great fight, but I think the aerials tired it out."
Wallowa Lake has set the stage for a season full of historic catches, one after another. However, Both admitted his fortune might have been a stroke of luck.
"I had fished the same area of the lake on Friday," Both said, "and limited out with five fish, the largest coming in at six pounds, six ounces."
